Cape Girardeau

Cape Girardeau was incorporated as a city in 1843 and was named after Jean Baptiste de Girardot, who was responsible for establishing a trading post in the area back in the 1730’s.   The city is approximately 26.4 square miles and is home to over 37,000 residents.  To some, the city is known as the “City of Roses,” because of a nine mile stretch of highway that used to be lined with dozens of rose bushes.  Unfortunately many of these do not exist today.

The city is home to two major medical centers;  Southeast Missouri Hospital and St Francis Medical Center.  It also supports the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport, which provides daily flights to St Louis Lambert Airport.  It is home to the Cape Girardeau Public School system,  a generous selection of Paraochial schools which includes Notre Dame High School, and Southeast Missouri State University.
